A competitor mention becomes a usable sales signal only after you know who said it, where it appeared, what the wording means, which account it belongs to, how fresh it is, and what seller action the evidence permits. The name alone is not intent.
Direct answer: preserve the original mention, classify its context, resolve identity, check account fit and existing relationship, then route the smallest proportionate action. A public mention can justify research without justifying “I saw you are unhappy with your vendor.”
Define a competitor mention signal
Write the observable event narrowly: a named person or company referenced a configured competitor in a permitted public source at a recorded time. Keep the source URL or durable reference, exact relevant context, speaker, account candidate, collection time, and expiry.
A current Salesmotion result-set page groups mentions across company communications, hiring posts, review and comparison sites, social posts, forums, and sales conversations. That vendor-authored taxonomy helps source discovery, but its conversion claims do not prove a mention will perform in your market.
This article covers public or permitted pre-outreach signals. Use the competitor-mention response guide for a buyer who raises a competitor directly in a call.
Classify the mention context
Context determines the maximum claim and action:
| Class | What is observable | Maximum safe inference |
|---|---|---|
| Current use | The source names the competitor as installed or used | Possible incumbent relationship |
| Comparison | The source compares named options | Category evaluation may be occurring |
| Dissatisfaction | A specific problem is attributed to the competitor | That speaker expressed that problem |
| Migration | The source states a move from or to the competitor | A transition was stated, with its date and scope |
| Hiring requirement | A job post requests competitor experience | The skill matters to that role; current use remains uncertain |
| Incidental | The name appears without evaluation context | Awareness only |
Preserve negation and quotation. “We do not use X,” an employee sharing someone else’s article, and a comparison page generated by a publisher are not current-use evidence.
Verify source and identity
Resolve the speaker, employer at the event time, parent or subsidiary, target account status, and CRM relationship. Do not silently attach an individual post to a namesake company. Mark whether the source is first-party company communication, an attributed individual statement, a third-party page, or an anonymous forum item.
Check source freshness and permanence. A cached snippet without an accessible source is not adequate evidence for personalized outreach. If the source changes or disappears, preserve the permitted audit reference and lower the action rather than presenting it as current.
Choose a proportionate action
- Incidental or unresolved: suppress or add to research only.
- Verified use: update account research; do not assume dissatisfaction.
- Verified comparison: review account fit, ownership, suppression, and existing activity before drafting.
- Attributed problem: frame the problem accurately and avoid insulting the incumbent or exposing surprising monitoring.
- Active migration: verify direction, date, scope, and whether any useful help remains.
The signal is not permission to send. Channel, region, consent, suppression, account owner, active opportunity, and recent outreach still control the action. The signal-based outreach workflow contains the full message and permission gates.
Build the review queue
Show the rep the source, short context, classification, speaker, identity basis, event and collection times, fit, existing CRM activity, conflicts, expiry, and proposed action. Let the rep accept, correct, reject, defer, merge, or suppress with a reason.
Use rejection reasons that diagnose the system: wrong competitor, incidental mention, wrong person, wrong account, stale source, unsupported interpretation, duplicate, poor fit, restricted contact, active owner, or no credible action.
Measure signal usefulness
Start with evidence and decision quality: source-access rate, identity precision, classification precision, duplicate rate, accepted-signal rate, accepted-action rate, correction time, suppression accuracy, complaints, and sales-accepted outcomes. Segment by source and context class.
Do not optimize alert volume. A narrower queue with visible evidence and fewer corrections can be more useful than a larger feed.
Where Gangly fits
Gangly repository facts list competitor mentions among supported connected signals and keep outreach under rep review. Evaluate Signal Detection against your source, identity, context, freshness, suppression, and action contract. This is first-party scope, not independent proof of coverage or conversion.
